The Guggenheim Museum

The Guggenheim was the first museum we checked out. Between 5:45pm-7:45pm last Friday, admission was on a donation basis. Whether that donation be $1 or $20, it was up to you. For us “economically conscious” folk, our donation reflected the former lol.
Right now they’re showcasing an amazing contemporary photography/video/performance exhibit entitled, Haunted. My favorite piece was a collage by [forgot artist’s name]. It was a photo essay comprised of found images and photographs from various sources (magazines, I believe). It spanned two walls and was intended to be experienced left to right. The artist depicted the human life cycle from birth to death, exploring themes of authority, behavior, and social experiences, while incorporating past and contemporary ideals. Yeah, I make it sound boring lol. You just have to see it and experience it to really appreciate the artist’s intention.

Typically they have the ceiling open to allow natural light in. However, for the purposes of Haunted, which included projected video installations on the top floor, they closed the roof.

Out of respect for the artists’ work, photography wasn’t allowed anywhere above the ground floor. I tried to be stealth and sneak these shots in, but each time, was reprimanded by the guards. Not that I wanted to photograph the art specifically and impose on the artists’ rights, just wanted to celebrate how beautifully designed the space was.

If you ever find yourself strolling down Central Park East, I highly recommend checking out the Guggenheim. If not for the artwork, then for its amazing architecture and stunning design.
